The License Is Only the First Line Item. Plan the Maintenance Years.
Why we price software maintenance for the full term on every security platform bid, and what lapsed coverage costs when it is time to upgrade.

On a recent bid for a Genetec Security Center system, we priced five years of Genetec Advantage, the platform's maintenance program, on every license line. Then we wrote renewals past year five into the exclusions so nobody assumes they are free.
Why we push this
- Maintenance is what delivers the software updates, including major releases and emergency hotfixes.
- Before the platform moves to a new major version, the license has to be upgraded, and that upgrade runs through a valid maintenance contract.
- Let coverage lapse and getting it back later costs a reinstatement fee on top of the renewal.
So a system that skips maintenance does not just miss features. It gets stuck on the version it shipped with, while the cameras, readers and servers around it keep moving.
Our take
When you compare bids, compare the coverage term on each license, not just the license count. Then put the renewal date on someone's calendar. The configuration tool warns you 30 days out, which is not much lead time for a purchase order.
Most enterprise video and access platforms work the same way, so the same check applies whichever one you run.
